Gunnedah Fire Extinguisher Testing
We visually inspect every fire extinguisher in your building for signs of damage or deterioration. We also ensure that there is a regulation “Fire Extinguisher” sign placed above each extinguisher to help identify its location.
Testing
We remove each extinguisher from its bracket and bag to check that:
- The pin has not been but can be removed.
- Check that the pressure gauge indicates that pressure is at the appropriate level.
- We clean the equipment and replace it as we found it, if not better.
Tagging
Once testing is complete, we will apply a compliance label to indicate the testing schedule which applies to this type of extinguisher and the date next due for testing.

FAQ
Everything You Need To Know
Do smoke alarms need to be hardwired or can they be battery operated?
Both are acceptable, depending on the building code and type of property. In many residential properties, hardwired smoke alarms with battery backup are required under NSW legislation. Battery-only models may be suitable for older dwellings, but all alarms must comply with Australian Standard AS 3786. It’s important to check your obligations and replace non-compliant units.
Can I test smoke alarms and extinguishers myself?
You can press the test button on a smoke alarm to check the alert sound, and visually check extinguisher gauges monthly. However, professional testing is still required at regular intervals to meet legal and insurance standards. Certified technicians use specialised tools and methods to assess actual functionality and compliance, which can’t be done through basic visual checks.
What are signs my extinguisher or alarm isn’t working?
Warning signs include missing tags, cracked casings, rust, blocked nozzles, expired dates, low pressure readings, or failure to sound during testing. For smoke alarms, chirping sounds may also indicate a low battery. If you notice any of these issues, the unit should be serviced or replaced immediately to avoid safety risks.
